At FM Conway, our commitment to inclusion is driven by our 30 by 30 initiative, which aims to achieve 30% female representation across our workforce by 2030. This strategic objective reflects our determination to create opportunities, challenge perceptions, and ensure women can thrive within construction and infrastructure.
My journey at FM Conway began in our in-house recruitment team, and that experience has shaped how I promote the business and the initiatives I support today. I’ve seen first-hand how the right exposure and encouragement can build confidence and open doors for women considering careers in our industry.
One initiative particularly close to my heart is the Transport for London - Women into Transport and Engineering programme, which we have proudly delivered in 2022, 2024, and 2025. This programme focuses on supporting women who have been out of work long term back into meaningful employment. Each two-week programme is designed to provide meaningful insight into FM Conway. During the first week, participants visit our asphalt plants, depots, and major projects across Central London to understand our operations and culture. In the second week, they join their designated divisions, gaining hands-on experience alongside our teams. The programme concludes with a careers day, offering CV and interview support, personal branding sessions, and a professional headshot. We are proud to have recruited three women from each programme, including a PMO Manager and two Graduate Engineers.
The construction and infrastructure sector continues to face a skills shortage, partly driven by outdated perceptions around inclusivity. Construction offers a wide range of career paths, and women are succeeding at all levels, but more must be done to showcase these opportunities and support inclusive working practices.
At FM Conway, we are proud to have women across all areas of the business and to support development through initiatives such as leadership and mentoring programmes. With 17% female representation, exceeding the construction industry average, and recognition at the Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering Awards, we remain committed to creating an industry where everyone can thrive.
