Our trusted coaches

Shireen Ali-Khan Executive Coach Women in Transport

Shireen Ali-Khan

Shireen is the founder of Active Consulting and the 12 Minute Hero, and a coach and co-director for Women in Transport’s Lead programme.

“For twenty years I have worked inside complex organisations across transport, infrastructure and logistics, sitting alongside people at the point where strategy meets the reality of how we actually behave. I work through a behavioural lens, and it has taught me that most of what holds capable people back is not a deficit in them. It is the way of working that was built for someone else, the habits that have quietly set, and the sense that putting their own time and energy first would be selfish.”

  • “I coach as a thinking partner, and I work with people at every level, whether you are early in your career and feeling unseen, in the middle and wondering why the effort is not moving you forward, or near the top and carrying so much for everyone else that there is little left for you.

“And none of this stays neatly at work, because what you carry at home comes through the door with you, and the pressure of the job follows you back out of it.”

  • “Here is what I have come to believe: the thing holding you back is rarely you. Recentring on what matters to you is not selfishness, it is taking proper ownership of your own life, and a lot of our work together is about doing that on purpose rather than waiting for permission to.

“We look at the situation you are actually in, at work and beyond it, and turn it into small repeatable actions that hold up under pressure rather than grand resolutions that collapse in the first busy week.

“So whether you are stepping up, starting over, or simply tired of running hard without feeling like you are getting anywhere, I would be glad to be in your corner.”

Louise Newton Executive Coach Women in Transport

Louise Newton

Louise is an experienced development, career transition and leadership coach with over 12 years of specialist practice in career coaching. She is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) accredited by the International Coaching Federation, with professional training from Barefoot Coaching and the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD). Louise is also a CIPD Chartered Member.

“My background is a blend of 20+ years of public and private sector experience, working for organisations including London Underground, Goldman Sachs, Randstad and English Heritage. I’ve helped numerous individuals achieve career success, but helping people realise their potential and being able to talk about themselves and their value with confidence has been a defining theme.

“I’ve changed careers three times and founded businesses, which, combined with studies in psychology, change management and organisational development, led me to work as a coach.”

  • “Broad professional and commercial experience means I can connect with a diverse spectrum of clients, but a particular focus is on helping women at all career levels to develop their brand and grow their ability to influence and lead.

“In parallel to career coaching, I mentor young-in-career women to guide them in defining their value proposition and identifying career pathways.”

  • “One of the reasons my clients enjoy working with me is that I listen – to what is both said and unsaid. And I ask questions, sometimes the really difficult questions, but in a way that helps my clients feel safe and able to explore their ideas, fears and options.

“My strengths lie in mixing strategic thinking and ideas with empathy and openness, and being curious about finding the most effective solutions to my clients’ problems, helping them get unstuck and moving forward with purpose and confidence.”

Iain Smith Executive Coach Women in Transport

Iain Smith

Iain has helped many women in transport feel more confident in their value, clearer about their direction, and braver in speaking up in the rooms that matter. He is also a coach and co-director for Women in Transport’s Lead programme.

Iain’s expertise spans leadership development, agile and hybrid working, wellbeing and resilience, diversity, employee engagement, and organisational change.

Iain’s senior career spans more than two decades and includes senior roles such as Product Director at City & Guilds, Head of Skills at Transport for London and adviser to the Mayor of London on apprenticeship strategies. His consultancy work features collaborations with industry leaders like TfL, Crossrail, and Metrolink (in Dublin). He is also the chosen leadership facilitator for the Urban Transport Community.

Beyond his coaching, Iain is also a mentor and #IAmRemarkable facilitator, advocating for equitable workplaces and supporting emerging leaders throughout the transport and infrastructure sectors.

  • Sessions with Iain are focused but never rushed; he reads the room, adapts to what people need, and brings humour that helps break down barriers and build trust. Many people describe him as someone who “goes the extra mile” and is genuinely in their corner – cheering them on from the sidelines, believing in them and encouraging them to go further.

“Helping people to learn and grow is my absolute driver. Most of my work involves helping people to achieve equilibrium (and perhaps even a state of calm, wellbeing or quiet happiness) so that they can work out how to achieve the things that they say that they want to.

“I have a wealth of experience across public and private sector organisations and an in-depth understanding of a range of internationally recognised methodologies to help individuals and organisations.”

  • Iain’s style is warm, human and quietly challenging: he listens closely, reflects back what he’s hearing, and then helps you turn insight into small, realistic actions rather than big, overwhelming plans.

Coaching clients say they trust him quickly, feel comfortable sharing their goals and doubts without fear of judgement, and always leave sessions with a clear focus and action plan.

Coaching with Iain has supported people to solve real problems, manage time and energy more effectively, navigate career moves and secure promotions and better packages, while staying true to their purpose and values.

“I am told that I provide a personable, engaging and honest communicative approach to each engagement and relationship, helping interpret different mindsets, understand key challenges and identify resistance to drive change and guide people towards positive results.

“I coach in a way that people describe as creating a calm, unhurried space where you can talk honestly about what’s happening in your work and life. What you want next, what options you have, and what might be getting in the way. I help people to identify and quantify situations that need fixing and to find a solution that is both practical and fitting.”
