When did you join Women in Transport?
I joined from the beginning - when Women in Transport was Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)
Why did you join Women in Transport?
I originally joined to connect with other women in industry to widen my network and also for all the fantastic training opportunities on offer. I then realised that I wanted to do more to support WiT so I joined the Board in 2010 and I have been an WiT Advanced Mentor for 5 years.
What do you enjoy most about being part of Women in Transport?
I enjoy being able to contribute back to the industry, support other women and value the connections I have made over the years. It is always interesting to hear everyone's stories and learn from these.
Current job title
Technical Director
What does your current job involve?
I am a Technical Director at WSP in the Liveable Places team. I currently focus on technical delivery, project leadership and winning work for multi-disciplinary teams across a range of transport-related projects including major active travel schemes and innovative sustainable transport strategies for public and private sector clients. I also have line management responsibilities and I support various team members aspiring to gain professional qualifications.
What's the best thing about your job?
I like the variety of projects I work on and working with people that are passionate about sustainable transport options and improving the built environment. It is always satisfying to be able to say 'I was part of the team that developed/designed/reviewed/influenced' infrastructure that has been built, even more so if users value it and if I am able to benefit from it.
How did you become involved in the transport industry?
I sort of 'fell into it' whilst I studied my civil engineering degree part time as I was working at a consulting firm in the highways team designing urban roads, learning CAD, manual drafting and 3D design. Following university I worked out on site working with site crews building rural highways and then moved into transport planning consultancy.
What do you like about working in transport?
I like the challenge and variety that every day brings working in transport with clients and teams to develop solutions and infrastructure that has a positive impact on people's lives. There are so many different opportunities within the transport sector so it really it a great industry to get into.
What are you most proud of?
I would say getting Chartered and then becoming a Fellow with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
