Career changes are often seen as risky but for many women, they can be the most rewarding and empowering decisions they ever make.
After 18 years as a Station Reception Officer with the Metropolitan Police Service, Laura never imagined moving into construction. But as her children became more independent, she made a conscious decision to invest in herself and explore a completely new direction.
Today, Laura is a Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Advisor at FM Conway, having been supported by the business to retrain and achieve her NEBOSH qualification. Reflecting on her journey, she says: “This career change saved me.”
Her experience shows that you don’t need a traditional construction background to succeed in the industry. The communication, organisation and problem-solving skills developed in previous roles are highly transferable and often exactly what employers are looking for.
FM Conway’s commitment to training, development and career progression helped Laura build confidence in a completely new field, proving that women can thrive when given the opportunity to step into unfamiliar environments.
For women considering a change, Laura’s message is clear: don’t rule yourself out. A career change can be a powerful step forward, and it might just open doors you never knew were there.
