Women in Transport: Team Member Insight - Sue Walnut

April 27, 2026 in Team Profile

Current job title

Managing Director, WalnutWorks Ltd

What does your current job involve?

I'm an independent consultant, and my focus is helping organisations get the best from their people and from public transport technology. At the moment, I am doing 2 very different contracts: supporting West Midlands Combined Authority as an enterprise architect and with advice around bus systems and technologies as they move towards franchising; and advising a transport tech company on their feature and technical roadmap. And, of course, I'm growing WalnutWorks' footprint and establishing its reputation, too!

What's the best thing about your job?

I get to do lots of thinking and creating and I get to work with a wide variety of great people!

How did you become involved in the transport industry?

I started in transport as a Data Analyst in the Market Analysis department of what used to be Travel West Midlands. I'd been working in marketing roles for a major publisher, and followed what I thought was the next step in a marketing journey. I never dreamed that it was instead the beginning of my journey in Transport!

What do you like about working in transport?

I love that with what I do, I can make a difference to the daily lives of of thousands of people through thoughful application of technology in transport! I believe in sustainablity and liveable cities and I love that I can help make that a reality.

What are you most proud of?

I've been involved in some great technology deliveries, but I'm proudest of the teams I builtn my teams at both National Express and at Vix -- amazing people who pulled together to become more than the sum of their parts!

Why did you join Women in Transport?

I was introduced to Women in Transport by a friend and, quite simply, it just sounded like a good idea! I think I liked the idea of the knowledge and networking events.

What is your role at Women in Transport?

West Midlands Regional Lead

What do you enjoy most about being part of Women in Transport?

I still like the knowledge sharing and networking! I like meeting new people and learning new things. I especially love the safe space that Women in Transport events provide to make new connections. But I also love it when I can help support people or connect people together.
