Women in Transport is excited to announce our new partnership with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Led by South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, they bring together the local authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. They work together to create a stronger, greener, fairer South Yorkshire, to unlock the potential of their communities, their businesses and places so they can thrive.
Their vision is for an economy which works for everyone, with inclusive and sustainable growth, building on strengths in innovation and advanced manufacturing.
Their aim is to build the sustainable transport network South Yorkshire needs and deserves. They are creating a transport system that works for everyone, connecting people to the places they want to go, within South Yorkshire, as well as nationally and internationally.
Their goal for South Yorkshire is to be a region that provides inclusive growth and progression opportunities for everyone, enabling individuals and employers to reach their potential, achieve their goals, drive productivity and contribute to their economic success.
Sonya Byers, CEO at Women in Transport, commented on the new partnership:
"We are absolutely delighted to welcome the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority as a new partner at such a pivotal time for transport in the UK. As power and decision-making continue to be devolved to combined authorities, it is vital that gender balance is embedded in shaping the future of our transport systems. Representation and inclusion must be at the heart of devolution if we are to deliver truly integrated transport strategies that work for everyone. Together, we can ensure that women’s voices, experiences and talents help drive a more equitable, sustainable and successful transport future for South Yorkshire and beyond.”
Melanie Corcoran, Executive Director of Transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, added:
“Our partnership with Women in Transport supports our commitment to building a transport network that works for everyone. Creating a transport network that is inclusive, reliable and accessible requires a broad range of experience and perspectives, and it’s so important that we have a diverse workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve. We want to actively encourage women to enter and progress in the transport sector.
“As we continue to deliver major investment across South Yorkshire, from bus reform to tram renewal and wider infrastructure improvements, we are investing in our talent, their development and progression and our partnership with Women in Transport will help us to do that.”
