Women in Transport is excited to announce our new partnership with Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority. They work with bus and train operators to make sure that public transport is: safe, reliable, affordable and accessible for everyone.
TfWM is responsible for monitoring and improving road safety in the West Midlands and looks after the 23 busiest routes in the region.
In 2023 TfWM launched its’ Refreshed Regional Road Safety Strategy which sets out the principles they will follow to achieve their aim. TfWM is working towards Vision Zero, a long-term mission where nobody is killed or seriously injured on the roads. Their aim is to have halved the number of road deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
Sonya Byers, CEO at Women in Transport, commented on the new partnership:
“We are delighted to welcome TfWM as a new partner and very much look forward to the active involvement of our new members in our regional and national activities. Women in Transport has been advocating on the work that Anne Shaw led as Transport Champion on Violence Against Women and Girls through our Women’s Safety Group. We also wholeheartedly support TfWM’s mission to create a transport network that is safe, inclusive and accessible to all.”
Michele Roberts, Head of Workforce Development and Professionals, Transport for West Midlands, said:
“This partnership with Women in Transport represents a powerful step forward in our shared ambition to make West Midlands transport not only safer and more accessible but truly inclusive - especially as a career. At the Transport Skills Academy, our mission is to bridge skills gaps and build lifelong careers, not just fill jobs across areas like engineering, planning, operations and digital technologies.
By working together with Women in Transport, we’re creating more opportunities for women to enter, advance and lead in the transport sector. We want to inspire confidence, break down barriers and ensure that diversity is at the forefront of what we do; playing a vital role in how we recruit, train and support people.
We believe this partnership will help us to amplify the impact of our programmes whether that’s apprenticeships, work experience, e-learning or leadership development. Together we can build a transport system that reflects, engages and serves everyone in our region.”
