Women in Transport is excited to welcome the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as our newest partner in advancing gender equality in transport. Led by Mayor Steve Rotheram, the Combined Authority brings together the six local councils of Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, and Wirral, working collectively to ensure that everyone benefits from the decisions they make.
Through devolution, they are using their powers and funding to deliver an integrated transport network, support business growth and create thousands of quality jobs. Their commitment to world-class innovation, fair employment, race equality, and climate action is helping to build a cleaner, greener, and fairer economy for all.
The Combined Authority is investing hundreds of millions of pounds to transform transport across the region. This includes new trains on the Merseyrail network, integrated transport hubs, electric buses, a 600km network of walking and cycling routes, and smarter ticketing—all contributing to the Mayor’s vision of a more connected, accessible city region.
In line with this, their Equality and Diversity Panels, which are made up of members with lived experiences across disability, gender, race, and sexuality, were launched in 2023, to help tackle discrimination, injustice, and inequalities, in order to improve outcomes for everyone. In August 2024 they also introduced the Intersectionality Panel.
Sonya Byers, CEO at Women in Transport, commented on the new partnership:
“We are thrilled to welcome the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as a new partner as the region continues to demonstrate bold leadership and investment in creating a truly inclusive and accessible transport network. Their commitment to embedding equity through initiatives like the Equality, Diversity, and Intersectionality Panels aligns strongly with our mission to amplify women’s voices and experiences across the transport sector. Together, we look forward to shaping a future where transport is inclusive for everyone.”
Katherine Fairclough, Chief Executive of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, said:
“We’re delighted to be joining Women in Transport - a powerful step in our ongoing commitment to inclusive leadership and greater representation across the transport sector. Women in Transport is doing incredible work to empower, connect, and elevate women across the industry and the Combined Authority is proud to be part of that journey toward a more inclusive future. This collaboration is about creating further opportunities for women to thrive, lead, and shape the future of transport. Together, we’re building a more equitable and visible space for women’s voices, ideas, and ambitions.”
