Celebrating 20 years of Women in Transport at the Clifton Suspension Bridge

There have been many events across the UK to celebrate 20 years of Women in Transport. What better place for a South West anniversary get-together, than at the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol?

Sonja Byers, Women in Transport CEO welcomed everyone and introduced Trish Johnson, the first female Bridge Master, Chartered Civil Engineer with over 30 years of experience and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Trish is responsible for managing the operation and care of this significant landmark. She discussed her career journey and day-to-day role. Over Women in Transport branded cupcakes and tea / coffee, members asked questions, chaired by Emma Poppleton from Arcadis. Trish shared her tips on mentorship, her professional highlights, challenges and how we can encourage more women to join the sector.

After this, attendees headed outside as the sun was setting over the bridge for a guided tour with a passionate volunteer guide. She offered insight into the history of the design, construction and process to completion whilst strolling across the 214-metre span.

Thank you to Trish and volunteers at the Clifton Suspension Bridge & Museum for having us, plus a thank you to all those that came along to support the South West Hub.
