The Equity Index Project, launched in 2023, is a pioneering initiative reshaping the transport sector by championing diversity and equity. The collaborative index establishes a vital baseline, recognising and rewarding best practices. This initiative extends beyond a mere index; it acts as a catalyst for continuous improvement, inspiring companies to drive positive change and foster a more equitable industry.

Women in Transport’s 2023 Equity Index report shows that the Gender Pay Gap in the transport sector is higher than the national average. Why is this and what can be done to address the issue in order to attract and retain women in the industry?

In 2022, the Department for Transport established the Transport Employment and Skills Taskforce (TEST). TEST is a partnership between industry & Government, with external Chair, Rachel Skinner, and comprises of leading transport industry figures who are best placed to reflect the sector’s concerns on skills and the transport labour market. TEST’s role is to act as a convenor of industry and share best practice in supporting the sector to:

  • Understanding future sector skills needs

  • Attracting people to work in the transport sector

  • Developing people and strengthening the sector

In this capacity, TEST will be partnering with Women in Transport (and others) to deliver a series of events that highlight topics of importance where we can learn from others within and beyond the transport sector.  With Women in Transport, these events will focus on the findings from the Equity Index.
