Women in Transport – West Midlands Hub Launch Event

June 16, 2022

On 27th May 2022 Women in Transport were delighted to launch the West Midlands Regional Hub at WSP offices within the iconic Mailbox.

Joining Women in Transport were over 40 members from National Express, West Midlands Trains, Sustrans, WMCA, TfWM, BMet College, Solihull College, Weightmans, WSP, BCU, Kier.

Members took part in our first panel discussion alongside industry leaders from WMCA, TfWM, WMP Safer travel team, BMet College and National Express, as we discussed tackling violence against women and girls.

Laura Shoaf and Anne Shaw, both Transport champions appointed by the Home Office, talked us through their recommendations following months of engagement across sectors with eight roundtable workshops with charities, women’s transport advocates and victim and survivor groups to enforcement officers, transport operators, planners and placemaking experts all coming together to discuss the importance of addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWGs) within the transport sector.

Thank you to everyone who participated in a lively Q&A that followed our superb panel discussion with Laura Shoaf, Anne Shaw FCIHT, Kay Burton-Williams, Paula Shortland, Dal Kalirai & our host Beverley Nielsen

We rounded the day off with a great evening celebrating West Midlands Hub launch with drinks and tapas at one of the many restaurants in the Mailbox

As we launch our Hub there's a big focus on the West Midlands region, you can’t miss the roadworks, and the number of cranes dominating the skyline. With the commonwealth games around the corner and the focus on inclusive growth, women remain under-represented in transport.  We are reaching out to businesses across public and private sectors to join the WiT as we shine a light on a gendered lens on Transport.

Our mission

●          Attraction and recruitment to transport sector across all disciplines,

●          Inspiring confidence and finding our voices

●          Creating a safe and inclusive spaces

Our next in person event will be a Walking Tour of Birmingham (mid July)
